Basil Lee
What is your current role?
I have recently moved to Helmsman LLC, where I am focused on developing the firm's IP and TMT practice areas. This marks a significant transition from my previous position at one of Singapore’s largest and most reputable IP firms, where I dedicated over seven years of my career. This new role has proven both rewarding and exhilarating.
My expertise lies in complex IP and commercial disputes but I also handle a diverse range of matters, such as IP transactions and strategy, and compliance with TMT and consumer protection regulations.
What is your proudest achievement?
Professionally, discharging an injunction, on an urgent basis, against the Kaws: Holiday art exhibition from taking place. This case held particular significance for me as victories in civil disputes typically serve only the successful party. Lifting the injunction allowed the public to experience the exhibition, and witnessing the impressive turnout at its opening brought me immense satisfaction. Beyond this case, I take great pride in assisting all my clients in reaching their goals and finding fulfilment in the collaborative journey toward their desired outcomes.
Personally, being the proud father of a 2-year-old!
If you had 25 hours in a day, what would you do with the extra hour?
There are so many things I would want to do in the extra hour! Like spending quality time with family, keeping fit, and catching up on reading – but realistically, I think I would be asleep for the full extra hour.
If you weren't a lawyer, what would you be?
I can't envision pursuing any other career that would as comprehensively capture my interest or provide a deeper sense of purpose. The dynamics of the legal industry and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact make it an exceptional profession for me.
Your favourite food haunt is...?
My current usual lunch haunt is Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, conveniently located close to my office (unfortunately it will be closed for renovations for 2 months!). Particular favourites are Hakka Leicha rice, chicken rice, and red snapper soup.
